Our North Star

All families across Oakland’s 78 square miles know their children will realize their full brilliance and potential at every public school in any neighborhood. Our community continually takes collective responsibility to reimagine, create, and improve a public education system where success is not predicated by race and class.

Our North Star reflects my unyielding belief in what is both possible and our imperative in Oakland. I work creatively and strategically with leaders across the city to reimagine, design, build, and transform our schools and the systems that support them.

Carolyn brings 25 years of experience working as an innovator, educator, and leader in Oakland and the Bay Area. Prior to joining the Educate78 team and launching the School Design Lab in 2015, she served as the Executive Director of the North Oakland Community Charter School (NOCCS). Under her leadership, NOCCS doubled its enrollment through a successful expansion to a K-8 model, increased its Academic Performance Index increased by 64 points, and developed an education program that is recognized on both a local and national level for its innovative practices. Carolyn also worked as a school leader in two Oakland public schools.

Carolyn began her career as a teacher in San Francisco and served in the very first cohort of the AmeriCorps members through Partners in School Innovation. She holds two Masters Degrees, one from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the University of California’s Principal Leadership Institute. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Syracuse University.

When she’s not geeking out on education and systems-change, Carolyn enjoys riding her bike, taking advantage of every opportunity to go to the beach and boogie board, laughing with her incredible wife, and collaborating on elaborate design and construction projects with her daughter.
