Analyze & Action Plan Using Gallup Teacher Engagement Survey Results

Now you have your Teacher Engagement Survey results…what’s next?

This guide is designed to provide your school community with a simple and accessible road map that will take you from understanding your school’s results to creating an action plan focused on improving teacher engagement.

Step 1: Convene a Team and Engage your Faculty

We recommend that each school convenes a team of 3-6 leaders (teachers and administrators) who can work collaboratively to analyze the results and plan for responsive and supportive action (steps 2-5). In order to maximize impact, we also recommend this team comes together periodically throughout the year to track progress.

We have created a couple of resources that may be helpful in planning to engage your school community about the results. The first option provides an agenda map for a meeting focused on understanding the results (see Step 2a below), and the second focuses on identifying the possible root causes of the results (see Step 2b below).

Step 2: Analyze Your Results

What do the results show?

Use these tools with your leadership team to digest the Teacher Engagement Survey results for your school. What are your teachers saying? What trends do you see over time (if you have results from last year and the year before)?

Why might teachers at our school feel that way?

Now that you’ve digested the results (identified strengths and opportunities), it is important to spend some time thinking about the underlying reasons for the things that have surfaced. What’s the story behind the numbers? What is it about the context/conditions at your school that have caused certain areas of engagement to be highlighted? We recommend that you use the simple and effective 5 Whys protocol to identify root causes for each of the challenges and opportunities that have surfaced from your school’s survey results.

Step 3: Select the teacher engagement area of focus based on the core goals for your school community

What are the core goals for your school community?

  • What are 3 or 4 core goals (e.g. from the SPSA, network priorities, etc.) for your school community this school year, and looking forward to next school year?
  • How would you prioritize these goals from most to least important for your school community?
  • Which of the goals would it make sense to focus on, in the context of aligning activities to strengthen teacher engagement?

Select the teacher engagement area of focus

  • Which teacher engagement item(s) should your school community focus on to help you reach your core goals? It’s important to select item(s) where the school community can have an impact on the root cause and is aligned with your school’s core goals. This will help ensure school community members are set up for success and do not feel they are being pulled in too many directions.
Step 4: Develop an action plan

You can use this simple planning tool to help map out the following considerations

  • What actions do we need to take to have an effect on this engagement item?

    Use resource list by area below

  • What three or four immediate actions should we focus on first to have an impact during the remainder of this school year?
  • What should we be planning for and setting up in readiness for next school year?
  • Identify project leaders, timeline, intended outcomes and regular review opportunities

Step 5: Launch your project!

Good luck implementing your project! Remember to schedule regular check in times for your team to review progress and determine if any adjustments need to be made – and remember to report back to the full faculty. Good communication is an important part of promoting a sense of engagement!
